LOJACK Joins the Party!

January 25, 2012

LoJack Corporation (NASDAQ: LOJN), the premier worldwide provider of tracking and recovery systems, will sponsor the event registration center at all 2012 Goodguys Rod & Custom Association events. More than 25 years ago, LoJack created the stolen vehicle recovery category and has since earned a reputation as the proven global leader in that market segment. The company delivers a 90 percent success rate in tracking and recovering stolen cars and trucks, and has helped recover nearly $4 billion in stolen LoJack-equipped global assets.

LoJack

LoJack offers a stolen vehicle recovery system that is specially designed to meet the unique requirements of classic and specialty vehicles and help owners protect the investment they make in these one-of-a-kind vehicles. LoJack for Classics leverages the company’s newly released next generation, self-powered stolen vehicle recovery technology, which offers several advantages that make it ideally suited to classic cars. One key benefit is that the self-powered LoJack for Classics does not draw energy from a vehicle’s battery, and as such does not need to be connected to the vehicle’s electrical system. Additionally, LoJack offers a personalized installation process to meet the specific needs of classic car owners.

Goodguys are looking forward to this new relationship. “Having LoJack sponsor our event registration centers is a perfect fit,” said Ed Capen of Goodguys. “They’re the gold standard in vehicle recovery. Over the last 25 years, there have been a small handful of specialty vehicles stolen from outlying areas on event weekends. With LoJack and LoJack for Classics having a major presence with us this year, hopefully vehicle theft will be a thing of the past.”

Stroker McGurk Could Use a Little Help!

January 11, 2012

BURBANK, Calif. — Tom Medley, creator of the “Stroker McGurk” cartoon character that appeared in Hot Rod magazine in the 1950s, and Goodguys Hot Rod Hero, once joked he would have liked to own a flamed ’40 Coupe.

But this isn’t what he had in mind. In mid-October, Medley suffered a hot rodder’s most feared nightmare – a fire that destroyed nearly all the contents of his garage – tools, welders, sewing machines, car parts, memorabilia, etc.

Medley escaped injury but his beloved 1940 Ford Deluxe coupe wasn’t so lucky. It was heavily damaged, a near total loss. In response, Medley’s friends and family have joined together to rebuild the car and get the 91-year-old hot rod legend behind the wheel again.

News of Medley’s misfortune quickly spread through the hot rod community, triggering an outpouring of support that has been remarkable. Currently, the car is being rebuilt by car-builder Randy Clark and his talented staff at Hot Rods & Custom Stuff in Escondido, Calif.

Considering the resources required to complete the project, help is needed. For those hot rodders interested in helping Stroker rebuild his ’40, a fund has been established to donate additional support. Regardless of the amount, everyone who pitches in will receive a gift from Medley himself.

Checks can be sent to the The Stroker McGurk 40 Ford Trust, 2710 Vista Crest Road, Orange, CA 92867.

Rich Overstreet, Publisher of Hotline News, has died

January 9, 2012

Rich Overstreet, publisher and producer of the independent hot rodding magazine “Hotline News” has died of complications from Pneumonia. He was 65. He lived his life as he wanted, at his own pace and never under anyone else. His wife Kathy was also lost to Pneumonia in December 2005. Overstreet was a true American entrepreneur, being self-employed and self-reliant since leaving home and starting a family in 1966.

Rich Overstreet

He first published Hotline News in January of 1984 and never missed an issue. The independent magazine covered over two decades of the hot rod scene (focusing primarily on Southern California activity) and was instrumental in promoting the formative years of the Goodguys Vintage Drag Racing program as well as Goodguys Rod & Custom events nationwide. A rodder himself, he loved cruising his ’57 “Rancheeeerooo” built by none other than custom legend Dick Dean.

Rich Oversrteet served our industry with class and dignity while creating a fun to read and informative magazine. For that we’re forever thankful.

Checking in with an old Friend…Craig Breedlove

January 6, 2012

Northern California’s Craig Breedlove, the 5-time land speed world record holder and pilot of a series of “Spirit of America” land speed racing vehicles is back in the news. He recently received the aptly named “Spirit of Competition” award from the Simeone Foundation Automotive Museum in Philadelphia. He’s only the fourth such recipient, and the first three, Mario Andretti, Janet Guthrie and John Fitch, reflect the museum’s orientation toward sports cars. It’s a lesser-known fact, however, that Breedlove also set 23 FIA speed records on the Bonneville Salt Flats in 1965 driving a Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe, CSX2287, which is in the Simeone collection (pictured).

Craig Breedlove accepting the Spirit of Competition” award in Philidelphia. That’s the ’65 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe he ser 23 FIA records in back in the 60s.

During his post-award remarks, Breedlove said that he hopes to return to Bonneville in 2013, the 50th anniversary of his first record, in an assault on the 800 MPH barrier, though with somebody else driving this time. He’s already located two surplus GE jet engines and has begun the engineering work necessary for such a run. Recently, interest in the land speed record has intensified. Two Australian teams, the Silver Bullet RV-1 and Aussie Invader 5R, hope to break 1,000 MPH, as does the U.K.-based Bloodhound SSC, a consortium led by land-speed vets Richard Noble and Andy Green.

The Spirit of America Formula Shell LSRV that took Breedlove to 675mph in 1996

Prior to his 1996 record runs in the Black Rock Desert behind the wheel of his Spirit of America Formula Shell LSRV (which ended in a 675mph looping left turn), Breedlove was more than accommodating to Goodguys members as his Rio Vista, CA shop was a destination on one of the early Hot Rod Week tours.

Goodguys wishes Mr Breedlove well on his quest to eclipse 800mph!

Above all other cars, the ’32 Ford holds a special place in the heart of most rodders. “The ’32 Ford is the quintessential hot rod,” said Goodguys President Marc Meadors. “I grew up in the back seat of my dad’s ’32 sedan crisscrossing the country going to events,” he said. The Beach Boys immortalized the ’32 Ford with their hit single ‘Lil’ Deuce Coupe.’ The Majority of our industry’s founding fathers were connected to a ’32 Ford or Chevy somehow. Its only fitting we honor this historic model year at our 2012 events.”
