Livermore man wins ‘65 Buick Giveaway Car!

November 15, 2009

Larry Rodriguez of Livermore, California won the Goodguys/Live 105/CBS 5 1965 Buick Giveaway car Sunday, November 15th at the 20th Autumn Get-Together in Pleasanton. Rodriguez, a long time Goodguys member with seven classic cars in his garage, was one of over 20 finalists who gathered at the fairgrounds for their shot at winning.

After everyone had drawn a key out of a hat (only one key would start the engine signifying the winner), Rodriguez had to patiently wait his turn while 12 others tried and failed to win the car before he stepped inside and fired the motor. “This is amazing! After all the conetsts I’ve entered over the years, I finally won! I feel kinda dizzy. My heart was beating so hard when the engine fired!”

Rodriguez has been a Goodguys member since 1994 and regularly attends Goodguys events in Pleasanton. He works for the Contra Costa Times newspaper in the building services division. In his hometown of Livermore, he regularly drives and enjoys all his classics which include two Hudson’s (a ‘51 and a ‘53), a ‘51 Plymouth Concord, a ‘54 Mercury, a ‘66 Thunderbird a ‘62 Impala and now thanks to his good fortune – a 1965 Buick.

His new ‘65 Buick LeSabre is powered by a 364 cubic inch, 355 horsepower Wildcat engine. Additional features include Vintage Air under dash AC, Intro Custom Wheels, exterior treatment from Steele Rubber Products and a light blue coat of Sherwin Williams Paint.

Congratulations to Larry from Goodguys, Live 105.3FM and CBS5!

November 10, 2009

Legendary import car builder, tuner and drifter Jay Pizarro will be competing in this weekend’s Street Challenge Autocross to be held during the 20th Autumn Get-Together at the Pleasanton Fairgrounds. Pizarro will be campaigning his 5.7 liter LS1 powered Lexus GS300 and pretty much plans to walk off with the trophy for the Street Machine class! He’s not cocky, he’s just confident! Here’s a few specs on Pizarro’s machine…

Car: Lexus GS300
Motor: 2004 5.7L LS1 motor
Swap: DGR Fabrication in Hayward
Aero Kit: Vertex
Wheels: Rays TE-37

Phil and Jeremy Gerber Presented with Goodguys Trendsetter Award

November 6, 2009

Las Vegas, NV – Phil and Jeremy Gerber of the Roadster Shop were presented with the Goodguys Trendsetter award at this year’s SEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. The award is presented annually at SEMA to rising young talents in the realm of rod & custom car building.

Together with their father Neal, the Gerber’s took ownership of The Roadster Shop in Elgin, Illinois in 2004 to expand the company’s product line and raise the bar for Midwestern hot rodding. While developing new lines of chassis and components, the Gerber’s discovered the burgeoning performance muscle car and street machine market and jumped in head first.

In 2006, a brilliant orange ground hugging 1966 Chevelle, complete with a custom chassis designed and built in-house, launched a new line of products and a new company – RS Performance Concepts. The Chevelle raised eyebrows throughout the industry and in the magazines and requests from customers for complete turn-key cars soon followed suit. In 2007, a bright green ’70 Chevelle served as RS Performance Concepts’ lab rat, furthering the performance and design capabilities of the Gerber brothers as well as allowing them to compete in the Goodguys’ popular Street Challenge Autocross events. It was also in 2007, the company moved to their all new 30,000 square foot state of the art facility located in Mundelein, IL.

Though they had slowly and methodically been working their way into the hot rodding scene, the Gerber’s exploded onto the forefront of the industry with the debut the 1962 Corvette “C1RS” at this year’s Goodguys PPG Nationals in Columbus, Ohio. Built and designed completely in house by Phil and Jeremy for customer Barry Blomquist, “C1RS” was the talk of the event and the entire industry as the Formula 1 racing inspired Corvette ripped through the Street Challenge Autocross with a winning time of 32.222 seconds while being named the unanimous winner of the Goodguys/Air Ride Technologies 2009 Street Machine of the Year. The Corvette’s landmark debut and subsequent victory in Columbus combined with their other builds and innovative chassis design has firmly ensconced Phil and Jeremy Gerber in the annals of hot rodding history. And they’re just getting started!

Current projects at the Roadster Shop and RS Performance Concepts include a ‘70 Challenger with a 528-inch Aluminum Hemi, a ‘69 Charger with a twin turbo Viper engine, a ‘31 Model A 5-Window on deuce rails, a Speed ‘33 roadster with hand fabricated aluminum track nose and injected nail head and many others you’ll see on the road in the coming months.

Past recipients of the Goodguys Trendsetter Award include; Chip Foose, Troy Trepanier, Alan Johnson, Eric Peratt, Tim Strange, Dave Lane, Zane Cullen, Dean Livermore, Jesse Greening, Troy Ladd and J.F. Launier.

Goodguys/Detroit Speed 2009 Muscle Machine of the Year Winner!

November 5, 2009

The Goodguys/Detroit Speed 2009 Muscle Machine of the Year has been awarded to Bryan Frank’s ’69 Pontiac Trans Am from Scottsbluff, Nebraska.

Frank, an avid collector with over 160 cars in his stable, decided he wanted something different and sought out the team at RPM in Warrendale, PA to build him this ground hugging G-Machine. He was drawn to RPM due to their penchant for blending top shelf styling with all-out performance. He asked them to build his ’69 Trans Am “like they would for themselves.”

The RPM team began with a rare drop-top – one of only eight made in 1969. After two years, the finished project debuted at the 12th PPG Nationals in Columbus this summer. When Frank first laid eyes on it, he was pleased to say the least! The convertible features one-inch extended rockers, a blended Camaro/Firebird front valence, a molded rear spoiler, stylized side vents and slick black paint with custom airbrushing by Skunkworx.

The custom-paneled engine bay houses a GM 350 crate motor with a smoothed and powder coated intake, MSD ignition and a Painless Performance computer. It’s backed by a Bowler 4L60E and a Currie 9”. The chassis features a reworked Fat Man front sub frame, a modified DSE Quadra-Link, RideTech shockwaves, and 6 and 4-piston Wilwood brakes.

The interior sports a fiberglass dash, AutoMeter gauges, bucket seats, a custom console and black leather upholstery by Trent’s Trick Upholstery.

Not only a looker, Frank’s ’69 Trans Am can run too! The car was flogged in Columbus at the 2009 Goodguys/Air Ride Technologies Street Machine of the Year Autocross where it clocked the 10th best lap time of 34.657 seconds!

The Goodguys/Detroit Speed Muscle Machine of the Year award is designed to honor a Muscle Car that’s been modified to perform at a high level including handling, stance, body & paint and engineering. Participation in a Goodguys Autocross is also mandatory for award finalists.

Congratulations to Frank and the RPM build team on their big win!

The runner up finalists for this year’s Detroit Speed Muscle Machine of the Year award included James Shipka, Calgary, AB (1967 Chevy Camaro), Johnny Teunissen, Corona, CA (1967 Pontiac Tempest), Scott & Laura Taylor, Sacramento, CA (1968 Ford Mustang), Tim Spencer, Pelham, AL (1966 Ford Mustang) Dave Lesisinger, Wall Lake, SD (1967 Camaro), Yanniv Sannes, Miami, FL (1965 Mustang), Tony Grzelakowski, Imlay City, MI (‘66 Chevy Chevelle), Mike Yale Tomball, TX (1970 Chevy Camaro) and Jesse Greening, Cullman, AL (1971 Camaro).

Goodguys/Grundy Worldwide 2009 Kustom of the Year Winner!

November 5, 2009

Jon and Kali Budda’s Newman Lake, Washington based pearl green ’57 Chevy has won the Goodguys/Grundy Worldwide Insurance 2009 Kustom of the Year award! The award is presented annually to a vehicle of 1936-1964 vintage which features all the trappings of a traditional kustom including paint and body modifications, traditional lines, and a low stance among other kustom traits.

The Budda’s classic Chevy was rescued from a field in Idaho. It was originally purchased new in Seattle and customized in the early ‘60s. The car resurfaced in the ‘90s and was eventually restored to its 60s kustom roots by Claude and Russ Freund of Hot Rods by Freund in Spokane, Washington.

The car features canted ’58 Ford pickup headlights, a ’58 Desoto bumper, shaved handles and trim and vertical ’59 Chevy taillights. It’s coated in a custom shade of PPG with black scallops by Russ. Power is a ’59 Corvette 283 with an .080 over bore and a 30/30 Duntov cam. It breathes with dual quads and Headman headers and is backed with a Muncie four-speed and a Hurst shifter.

The interior features the bucket seats and a steering wheel from a ‘59 Impala, a ’62 T-bird rear seat and white leather upholstery by George Frank. The combination of the car’s 60’s roots, traditional styling and overwhelming curb appeal made it a popular choice for this year’s award.

The runner up finalists for this year’s Grundy Worldwide Insurance Kustom of the Year award included Tom Pagano, Rancho Cordova, CA (1953 Ford F-100), Tony Feil, Whitehouse Station, NJ (1940 Pontiac Convert), Jim Cannon, Saint John, IN (1949 Mercury) and Stan & Joyce Eilmann, Mooresville, NC (1951 Ford).

2009 Truck of the Year-Late Winner!

November 4, 2009

Kirk Johnson’s silver ’68 Ford truck from Sacramento, California has been selected as the winner of the Goodguys Truck of the Year-Late award. The award honors a 1953 through 1972 vintage tricked out truck.

Kirk is the second owner of this killer 60’s pick ‘em up and he has owned it over thirty years. It was his high school truck back in the day and oh baby has it come a long way! It was given a five star make over by Roseville Rod & Custom with many modifications that slip right past the eye.

For starters, the rear of the cab has been leaned forward to match the door post, all the seams have been smoothed, the fenders were brought in flush with the hood, the tailgate was modified, the doors have been re-skinned to eliminate the lower rocker. The grille was sectioned 1” to accommodate the reworked fenders, the bumpers were modified and the list goes on!

Power is a 428 Cobra Jet backed by a C6 transmission and a Currie 9” on a four-link out back. TCI front suspension, rack & pinion steering and Wilwood discs round out the chassis. The extra trick wheels are 18 and 20-inchers from Evod Industries.

Inside the cab, the dash pad was pulled out and the dash smoothed accordingly with a recessed center section. AutoMeter gauges sit in a custom cluster and the steering wheel was made in England for an AC Cobra. Dave Putnam covered the ’91 Acura Legend seats and other interior components in black leather.

The end result is a stunner of a truck and ya just don’t see late 60s Ford pickups this nice! Congrats to Kirk and the Roseville Rod & Custom team! The runner up finalists for this year’s Truck of the Year-Late award included Kevin & Karen Bahr, Defiance, MO (1956 Ford), Iron Works Speed, Bakersfield, CA (1957 Chevy), Les Allen, Arlington, WA (1956 Chevy), Greg Panosh, Manchester, IA (1953 Chevy) and Terry Temples, Alpharetta, GA (1959 Chevy).
