Membership Qualifier Chosen for Supernova!

June 23, 2009

Seventy year old car salesman and lifelong hot rodder Frank Kallam of Greensboro, North Carolina has been selected as the Goodguys Super Nova Grand Prize Giveaway member qualifier. The computer generated random drawing which selected Kallam from 70,000 Goodguys members worldwide, was held Monday, June 22nd at Goodguys Headquarters in Pleasanton, CA.

Having just had to undergo rotator cuff surgery, Kallam will not be able to attend the event to try his own luck at the Giveaway Ceremony Sunday, July 12th in Columbus. Goodguys will provide a stand in for him. Contest rules state the final qualifiers do not need to be present to win but Columbus always draws a very healthy and enthusiastic group of qualifiers who come to try to start the car with the winning key each year.

An avid street rod and muscle car enthusiast, Kallam has been a Goodguys member since 2003. He regularly attends Columbus (when he’s not laid up with a bum shoulder!) as well as the Southeastern Nationals each October in Charlotte. He’s owned dozens of cars over the years including a 34 Chevy Coupe, ‘33 & ‘54 Buicks and a 62 Chevelle. He’s currently building his first G Machine –a 1969 Camaro. He indicated he purchased one of the limited edition ZL1 427 big blocks that GM produced as a special edition last year. He’ll mate the big block to a Tremec 5 speed.

Good luck to Frank and all final Supernova qualifiers!

Two of the year’s biggest awards will be presented at the Goodguys 12th PPG Nationals July 10, 11 & 12 in Columbus, Ohio! Several new cars will be making their event debut in Columbus along with some pristine hot rods and street machines that debuted earlier this year.

The Street Machine of the Year category will be perhaps the strongest we’ve seen. The Roadster Shop ’62 ‘Vette, a ’65 Mustang fastback and ’67 Camaro by Roger Burman, two G-Machines from Time Machines Inc including a convertible ‘Cuda and a Boss Mustang, a ’69 Firebird and a ’72 Chevelle from RPM Motorsports, a ’70 Cuda from privateer Brett Hunter, Roger Ritzow’s ’56 Chrysler from the Rad Rides stable and many more are expected!

The Street Rod of the Year competition will be equally as impressive. STREET RODDER’S Brian Brennan called the other day indicating that some other top secret projects would be unveiled in Columbus as well. You’ll just have to show up and see who’s in contention!

It’s going to be a banner year in Columbus with cars coming from all over the country to enjoy the biggest and best Goodguys event on the calendar! Below is a complete breakdown of the specific criteria for both Street Machine and Street Rod of the Year awards.

Goodguys 2009 Hot Rod of the Year Winner!

June 16, 2009

Bill Steele’s Hemi powered 1930 Model A Ford Coupe from Oakldale, Pennsylvania was named Goodguys 2009 Hot Rod of the Year at this weekend’s 21st Hot Rod Nationals at O’Reilly Raceway Park in Indianapolis. The low slung brown and black hemi hot rod wowed everyone here in Indy.

Steele, a custom motorcycle builder by trade, explained after the awards ceremony that this was his first whole hearted attempt at designing a hot rod. The car came to Indy with only 25 miles on it but Steele was more than happy to drive it during the competition and thrash it a little on the drag strip. The award criteria calls for all participants to make a lap around the famed Indy Brickyard, a 100-mile roundtrip run up to Sharpsville then back to O’Reilly Raceway Park for an 1/8th mile time trial on the drag strip.

Steele’s chopped coupe combines masterful build quality with traditional styling – a trend that has been predominant over the past several years in the hot rodding scene. The little coupe features a 331-inch hemi with a custom hand made intake complete with” four 2’s”, handmade headers, hand made bomber style seats and black artillery wheels. The paint is a unique blend of brown suede with gloss black accents.

This was by far the finest field of cars ever assembled for the Hot Rod of the Year competition. In total, fourty-five cars entered the competition. Here’s a look at the top 5 finalists: Don Smith, Mansville, TX ’32 Ford Sedan, Jim Martin, Mentor, OH, ’32 Ford Coupe, Bill Steele, 1930 Ford Model A Coupe, Bart Grange, 1932 Ford Coupe and Dick Stevens, 1928 Ford Model A Sedan.

To see more of Steele’s coupe, check it out at next month’s 12th PPG Nationals July 10-12 in Columbus, OH. It will also be featured extensively in the September issue of the Goodguys Goodtimes Gazette!
