Goodguys 2010 Yearbook Cover Photo Contest Now Open!

October 28, 2009

For the first time in Goodguys’ history we are opening the cover of our yearbook for reader submissions. That’s right! Here’s your chance to get your favorite photo on the cover of the 2009 Goodguys Yearbook that will be distributed to every participant at every event throughout the 2010 season. Get your photography noticed!

Basically we’re looking for great VERTICALLY-formatted (taller rather than wide) hot rod, custom and muscle car-related photographs. They can be from a Goodguys event, on the road, in the garage, etc. They can be photos of your car, a buddy’s car or just one you thought was cool.

What do you win? How does $250, a year subscription to the Goodguys Gazette, and ten copies of the 2009 Goodguys Yearbook with your photo on the cover sound? Pretty cool, eh?

Well, what are you waiting for? Dig through your stash of favorite photos or get out there and shoot something. To submit, log onto www.goodguysforum.com and look for the “Yearbook Contest” under General Discussion or submit your low-res (600×800 pixels maximum – .jpeg format) photo entries to editor@good-guys.com. The subject of your email should be “Yearbook Contest.” If your submission is chosen, you’ll be required to supply a high-res image (2600×3500 pixels minimum – .jpeg format) to use for print.

Click here for complete contest rules.

Contest ends 1/1/10. Good luck!

Don Smith’s “Hemrod” Wins “Mother’s Pick”

October 28, 2009

Mother’s Polishes, Waxes and Cleaners has selected the national winner of the “Mother’s Pick” – a special award selected at 12 Goodguys National events this year that was presented to a vehicle that “had the look and shine of a true winner!”

Don Smith’s anti-freeze green ’32 Ford sedan “Hemrod” was chosen as the winning car.

Smith’s sedan was a popular attraction on the 2009 Goodguys event trail. It was a top five finalist for the Goodguys Hot Rod of the Year, Goodguys/Classic Instruments Street Rod of the Year and the Goodguys/Hushpower America’s Most Beautiful Street Rod award. Built by Eric Peratt and the team at Pinkee’s Rod Shop, the sedan is a true work of art combining old and new styles in seamless transition.

The sedan’s body has been shortened 1.5 inches, wedge-chopped, the rear fenderwells raised and the rear apron is rolled in towards the quickchange. Power comes from a neatly detailed 392 hemi backed by a six-speed. Those cool wheels are one-off Magnesium-style with safety-wired knock offs. The interior is a work of art in itself with many one off parts and a bench-style bomber seat.

As the national winner of the Mother’s Pick, “Hemord” will be featured in the Mother’s display out front of the Las Vegas Convention Center at next week’s SEMA Show.

Mothers Waxes, Polishes and Cleaners are some of the finest quality car care products on the market today and have been an industry leader for over thirty years. For more, visit http://www.mothers.com

2010 West Coast Nationals Welcomes Vehicles through 1972 vintage!

October 21, 2009

The 24th West Coast Nationals scheduled for August 27, 28 & 29, 2010 at the Pleasanton Fairgrounds will be open to rods, customs, classics and muscle cars through 1972. It’s the first time in the event’s long history that pre ’73 vehicles will be eligible to participate.

Since 2004, the event has been open to 1957 and earlier vehicles only. “We felt now was the time to bring the West Coast Nationals in line with all of our other national events,” Goodguys President Marc Meadors said. “Goodguys events have always been about blending pre-’49 street rods with 50’s era customs and cars from the 60s and early 70s. It’s been a successful formula for years and has helped spawn a tremendous marketplace for hundreds of manufacturer’s that are relatively new to the industry. The West Coast Nationals will look awesome with 60s and early 70s cars added to the mix!”

The West Coast Nationals has been the highest quality event of its kind for over two decades. With the new eligibility, late 50s, 60s and early 70s cars and their owners from throughout the nation who have never had the opportunity to attend the Goodguys ‘Crown Jewel’ can now enjoy the festivities” Goodguys Vice President of Event Operations Harry Daviess said. “We have room for additional cars at the Pleasanton Fairgrounds. We’re really looking forward to producing the same fantastic summer weekend the hot rod guys have enjoyed for so many years.”

Goodguys/Street Rod Headquarters 2009 Truck of the Year Winner!

October 15, 2009

Betsy Rose’s 1935 Ford pickup from Boyerstown, Pennsylvania has been named Goodguys/Street Rod Headquarters Truck of the Year (Early) for 2009.

Built by Ted Munsell and the team at Trick Works in Telford, PA, Betsy’s immaculate blue pick up is a traditionally styled stunner that has been in her family since the 1960s. She wanted to keep the truck as stock appearing as possible yet refined and elegant. The Trick Works team did her and her father, the truck’s original owner proud.

After years of meticulous craftsmanship, the truck hit the road earlier this year. It features a reshaped grille shell, ’35 Ford passenger car front bumper with custom fillers, reworked drip rails and countless other oh-so subtle improvements. One of the things the trained eye will notice is the continuous 3/16” gaps and seams throughout the entire length of the truck – a sign of a masterfully built machine.

Under the hood is a 306 small block Ford with reworked Sanderson Headers to fit the GTP heads. Custom stainless fuel lines and wire tubes feed the motor and C4 transmission its essential fluids. The reworked body sits atop a TCI chassis equipped with Mustang II IFS and Ford 9-inch rear end. It rolls smoothly on Budnik Famoso wheels wrapped in Dunlop sport 5000 rubber.

The truck’s rich color is a unique PPG Harley Davidson “Luxury Blue” applied in house at Trick Works. The leather Interior was stitched by Extreme Auto interiors of Roslyn, PA.

The runner up finalists for this year’s Street Rod Headquarters Truck of the Year Early award included Steve & Janet Spann, Spanaway, WA (1948 Chevy Pick Up), Ricky Tedesco, White Plains, NY (1931 Ford Pick Up), Mark Sundell, Waynesville, MO, (1937 Chevy Pick Up), John J. Cambra, Manteca, CA (1931 Ford Roadster Pick Up) and Paula & Ken Robinson, Frisco, TX (1940 Chevy Pick Up)

2nd Nostalgia Nationals on Tap This Weekend in Bowling Green, KY!

October 14, 2009

09-612The Goodguys 2nd Nostalgia Nationals, this weekend October 16-18 at Dallas Jones’s Beech Bend Raceway Park in Bowling Green Kentucky will serve up a heavy dose of drag strip yesteryear giving both fans and participants one last chance to revel in nitro fumes and tire smoke before winter sets in.

Full Event Info: www.nostalgianats.com.

The Nostalgia Nationals is two events in one with a full scale vintage drag race as well as a rod & custom show & shine for vehicles 1972 & earlier, sprawling throughout the scenic grounds of the historic facility on the outskirts of Bowling Green. Manufacturer’s exhibits, an auto parts swap meet and cars for sale corral will also be featured.

Full fields of nostalgia top fuel dragsters and nostalgia funny cars are expected. In top fuel, defending event champion Michael Sexton will look to repeat his improbable 2008 victory as he was the only alcohol burning dragster in a field of nitro burners at last year’s inaugural event. To his delight – the fuel cars all had trouble while he consistently ran ‘em off their feet. This year won’t be as easy with the likes Blue Suede Cruise winner Randy Bridges, Howard Haight in the “Nitrodiction” entry, “Diamond Dave” Miller, Kevin Brewer’s “Midwest Threat”, Charlie Smith, Dennis Corso, Jeff Miller’s “Time Bandit” and many others lining up to take home a big win in the season finale.

In Nostalgia Funny Car, Steve Nichols and the “Mill Road Boys” ’70 Camaro team look to continue their momentum coming off a win at the Blue Suede Cruise last month in Norwalk, Ohio. The best Funny Cars in the Midwest are expected to do battle in Bowling Green including Peter Gallen’s 5-second “Poverty Stricken” ’74 Vega, Danny Miller’s “Rear Gears” ’70 Maverick, Paul Romine’s “Man O’ War” ’79 Mustang, John Dunn’s ’69 Nova, Shawn Bowen’s Michigan based “Violator” ’78 Pontiac Trans Am and many more.

The 2nd Nostalgia Nationals is also the third and final match race between history’s most famous fuel altereds – Rich Guasco’s “Pure Hell” and Dave Hough’s “Nanook.” The two nitro burning roadsters have put on breathtaking races this summer, including a 6.460 @ 198.79 to 6.475 @ 214.11 thriller in Norwalk, Ohio last month, – Nanook taking the win. But Guasco and the Pure Hell team look to turn the tables in Bowling Green with a brand new engine. “We put in a fresh motor the other day and have a brand new blower,” Guasco said. “It should do the trick.”

Out in the rod & custom show & shine, spread throughout the scenic Beech Bend– acres of classic cars and hot rods will be on display. A midway full of vendor exhibits will offer the latest products and tech support while a vintage auto parts swap meet and car corral will offer cars and parts for sale.

Event hours are Friday and Saturday 8am to 5pm and Sunday 8am to 3pm. General admission is $20 per day. Kids 7-12 $6. Kids 6 and under are FREE. A three day weekend pass is available for $55. Tickets are available at the event gates or online at www.nostalgianats.com.

Former Goodguys/VRA Race Reporter Darryl Jackman Passes

October 9, 2009

Darryl Jackman, the former race reporter that brought thousands of race fans around the country instant drag race results during the Goodguys/VRA West Coast Championship Series, has passed away.

Jackman started reporting in real time from Goodguys Vintage Drag Racing events in 2002 and soon gained a huge following through the website Drag Race Central. Jackman worked right along side the announcers in the tower, taking notes on each and every run throughout the duration of the weekend. He built the entire vintage drag racing database that Drag Race Central still uses to this day during his time reporting for Goodguys and DRC.

He took his reporting job very seriously and went to great lengths to make sure everything was right, down to the last decimal point of a run, before it was published. His professional skills and his warm personality endeared him to the entire Goodguys/VRA staff and competitors.

Darryl was unexpectedly admitted to the hospital recently and did not survive complications from the necessary surgery and a pre-existing cancer. He is survived by his wife, Laurel, and a sister, Patti.

No information is currently available from the family on Services or Memorials.
