Strumming for Vets at Summer Get-Together

May 27, 2010

Strumming for Vets, a charitable organization that teaches disabled veterans how to play guitar, will make an exclusive live appearance at the 17th Summer Get-Together June 5 & 6 at the Pleasanton Fairgrounds. Based right here in the Bay Area, the Strumming for Vets ensemble will perform live acoustic music sets both Saturday from 1-3pm and Sunday from 2-3pm at the entertainment stage.

Founded by veteran John Rola of San Jose, Strumming for Vets provides acoustic guitars, gives them to disabled veterans then teaches them how to play by providing lessons. With donated guitars and teachers donating their time, the vets are given a new type of therapy that works wonders! Once they’re playing guitar at a high level, the group performs at public venues such as the Summer Get-Together.

The group will have tee shirts and hats available for purchase at the event. The funds generated from their merchandise sales goes directly towards the purchase of guitars for the disabled vets. Come out and hear some great music and support a wonderful local program!

Iron Works Speed & Kustom takes delivery of CleanAir 55 body!

May 19, 2010

Project CleanAir ‘55 is underway! The Experi-Metal all steel ’55 convertible body was delivered to Roger Lee and the gang at Ironworks Speed & Kustom last week! The customized ’55 Chevy convertible will serve as a giveaway promotional vehicle during the 2011 Goodguys Rod & Custom Association national event series.

The heart of CleanAir ’55 is the emissions-legal LS3 E-Rod motor from General Motors. The prevailing goal of the build is to demonstrate how a reproduction body can be titled with the new emissions legalpackage in the state of California. SEMA and General Motors will be working closely with Goodguys to help work this project through all levels of the titling and emission process in California.

Goodguys will cover the entire process of the build in the Goodguys Gazette. The immediate goal with CleanAir ’55 is to bring the Hermance Design artist’s rendering to life at Ironworks this summer and display the car in bare metal at the 24th Goodguys West Coast Nationals August 27-29 in Pleasanton. From Pleasanton, the car will be shipped to Kenny Davis Hotrods in Rogers, Arkansas where the all steel convertible will be covered in bright red PPG paint. The next stop will be the Recovery Room in Plattsmouth, Nebraska where Tracy Weaver will build and install the custom interior and top. After the interior is buttoned up, its back to Ironworks in Bakersfi eld California for final assembly. Goodguys will then take the car to Sacramento to work with the California State titling and emission department to show how the process of getting this type of vehicle legally titled and on the road in California.

CleanAir ‘55 will debut at the Goodguys 2nd Spring Nationals in Scottsdale, Arizona in March 2011 and will then be taken to 20 Goodguys National events across the country. The car will be displayed at the 2011 SEMA show in Las Vegas before being given away at the Goodguys Southwest Nationals held in Scottsdale Arizona in November of 2011.

Bridgestone Reaches Out to aid Flood Victims

May 16, 2010

Nashville, TN – After the devastating floods on May 1st and 2nd in Nashville, the focus of the Goodguys 5th Bridgestone Nationals changed. The event is now not only a weekend to celebrate rods & customs, but a rallying point for flood relief efforts as the city continues to move forward.

The event’s title sponsor Bridgestone Americas Tire Operations (BATO), a subsidiary of Bridgestone Americas, Inc. is headquartered in Nashville. Bridgestone Americas, Inc. and its parent company, Tokyo-based Bridgestone Corporation, recently donated $100,000 to several Middle Tennessee Red Cross chapters.

”Our teammates truly sympathize with the tragedy suffered in the Middle Tennessee region,” said Rod Stotsenburg, Performance Marketing & Events Manager, BATO. “We are fully committed to helping Nashville and the surrounding areas recover from the recent flooding. As the presenting sponsor we commend the Good Guys for partnering with Hands On Nashville and encourage everyone to come out to the event to enjoy a great car show but also to support those in need.”

Goodguys has partnered with Hands on Nashville to help raise funds for the victims of the flood and promote volunteerism. Flood relief donation kiosks will be set up at the ticket gates at next week’s 5th Bridgestone Nationals at LP Field.

The 5th Bridgestone Nationals begins Friday, May 21st and runs through Sunday, May 23rd. General admission is $18, kids 7-12 $6, children under 7 years of age receive free admission. In addition to the acres of gleaming hot rods fans will have a multitude of activities to enjoy plus live entertainment. The event will also have children’s activities which include the always popular “Make and Take” model car exhibit at which youngsters can assemble a complete snap-together model kit to take home courtesy of Revell. Face painting and balloon animals will also be featured as well as a coloring contest at the PPG Paint exhibit.

The flood not only took its toll on the community but hot rodders as well. Steve and Sheri Tracy reported that their Advanced Plating facility sustained flood damage. As a result they had to postpone the 5th Bridgestone Nationals Kick Off Party scheduled for Thursday, May 20th. But there may be a silver lining for the Tracy’s and Nashville hot rodders. They have organized a large “FLOOD SALE” at Advanced Plating May 20, 21 & 22. They will sell everything from their parts line that was submerged under water. This includes intakes, valve covers, air cleaners, carburetors, and virtually anything you can find in their online store. For more on the sale visit www.advancedplating.com

Advanced Plating Nashville Kick Off Party Postponed

May 16, 2010

The recent flooding in the city of Nashville has taken its toll on the entire community. Our friends Steve and Sheri Tracy of Advanced Plating got hit hard by flood waters and as a result sustained damage to their popular facility.

The Tracy’s reluctantly reported they will postpone the kick off part until next year’s event. For years they have opened their shop and welcomed all hot rodders and Goodguys prior to the Nashville Nationals. Our hearts and prayers go out to them in this challenging time. On the positive side, Advanced Plating has organized a large “FLOOD SALE” at their facility May 20, 21 & 22. They will sell everything from their parts line that was submerged under water. This includes intakes, valve covers, air cleaners, carburetors, and virtually anything you can find in their online store. For more on the sale visit www.advancedplating.com

Thursday’s Poker Run, which leaves the Marriott at 11am will go forward as planned.

In an effort to aid the victims of the Nashville floods, Goodguys has partnered with Hands On Nashville to raise money. Donation kiosk’s will be set up at event ticket gates. More information on ways to donate and volunteer can be found at www.HON.org

2010 Goodguys Editor’s Challenge Autocross Results!

May 15, 2010

Some of the industry’s most recognized magazine editors were in Costa Mesa today at the Goodguys 4th Meguiar’s Orange County Get-Together to compete in the Editor’s Challenge Cup Autocross. Eleven editors did battle on the course (set up as a 30-second two lap circuit) to claim ultimate victory!

This year’s winner Nick LiCata charging the course in his ’01 Camaro

This year’s format differed slightly with all editors being provided with 3 runs in 3 different vehicles. The cars included the Detroit Speed & Engineering ’69 Camaro, the Speed by Spectre ’70 Mustang fastback and a stock 2010 Dodge Challenger. They then had the option to substitute one lap in the provided vehicles with one lap in their personal car. The final results were tallied using all three runs, then dividing that number by 3 to get the competitor’s final average time.

The Detroit Speed ’69 Camaro

When the smoke had cleared it was Nick LiCata of Camaro Performers magazine that took home the trophy. Licata, who was also victorious in 2008 here in Costa Mesa logged a 32.295 in the ’70 Mustang, a 34.396 in the ’10 Dodge Challenger and a blistering 29.955 in his own 2001 4th generation Camaro he calls ‘Black Betty.” Licata’s 3-lap average was 32.2153.

The 2010 Dodge Challenger straight off the rental lot!

Car Craft’s Jeff Smith finished second with a 3-lap average of 32.2313 – just about .200th’s of a second off LiCata which made for a thrilling competition.

For his win, LiCata took home one of the new billet Goodguys awards for his desk and serious bragging rights in the hallowed halls of Source Interlink Publishing Company!

Final 3-Lap Average Times – Goodguys 2010 Editor’s Challenge
1. Nick LiCata, Camaro Performers, 32.2153
2. Jeff Smith, Car Craft Magazine, 32.2313
3. Henry DeLos Santos, Chevy Hi Performance, 32.489

We know there are people here in town that lost everything. For every dollar raised at the event, Goodguys will match it dollar for dollar. Hot rodding has always been a family hobby and a fun hobby. We are a close knit fraternity and we can make a difference. ”

July 9th 2010 – JULY 9th AS “COLLECTOR CAR APPRECIATION DAY”

May 10, 2010

SEMA SECURES U.S. SENATE RESOLUTION DESIGNATING JULY 9th AS “COLLECTOR CAR APPRECIATION DAY”
Lawmakers Acknowledge Importance of Collection and Restoration of Historic and Classic Cars

Washington, D.C. (May 10, 2010) — The United States Senate passed Senate Resolution 513 (S. Res. 513) at the request of the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) and the Automotive Restoration Market Organization (ARMO) Council designating July 9, 2010 as “Collector Car Appreciation Day.” The resolution was the result of an effort undertaken by ARMO as a means to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society.

S. Res. 513 was sponsored by Congressional Automotive Performance and Motorsports Caucus members Senator Jon Tester (D-MT) and Senator Richard Burr (R-NC). Senators Tester and Burr have been strong advocates for the automotive hobby in Washington, and S. Res. 513 reaffirms their understanding of the cultural importance of collector cars. The Caucus is an informal, non-partisan group that pays tribute to America’s ever growing love affair with the car and motorsports. The Caucus recognizes the integral role collector cars have played in fostering our nation’s appreciation for motorsports.

The resolution was the result of an effort undertaken by SEMA and its councils as a means to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society. Restoration businesses help save our nation’s heritage while providing well-paying, high-skilled jobs nationwide.

SEMA Vice President of Government Affairs Steve McDonald said, “We greatly appreciate the United States Senate’s recognition of the important role classic car restoration serves in our country. As Americans gather at car cruises and other events in conjunction with ‘Collector Car Appreciation Day’ on July 9, these vital contributions will be honored and preserved.”

It just so happens that July 9th, 2010 is opening day of the Goodguys 13th PPG Nationals! You can bet we’ll be appreciating collector cars at the largest Goodguys event of the year! Stay tuned for more on this…
