Goodguys 13th PPG Nationals presented by Bridgestone Joins Nationwide Car Celebration Friday, July 9th 2010

June 18, 2010

– Organizers across the country unite to recognize first-ever “Collector Car Appreciation Day”

Columbus, OH – The Goodguys Rod & Custom Association will join organizers across the country to celebrate the first-ever Collector Car Appreciation Day during the 13th PPG Nationals presented by Bridgestone which runs Friday July 9th through Sunday July 11th at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, OH. The massive event happens to be the country’s largest classic car/hot rod show so it’s only fitting the first annual Collector Car Appreciation Day falls during the popular event.

The United States Senate declared the second Friday in July as Collector Car Appreciation Day as a means to raise awareness of the vital role automotive restoration and collection plays in American society.

“We are pleased that our elected officials have acknowledged the positive presence that the automotive industry has in local communities,” said Goodguys President Marc Meadors. “We’re looking forward to the 13th PPG Nationals presented by Bridgestone where tens of thousands of people will demonstrate their love for automobiles. The event is going to be even more special knowing that car-lovers across the country are celebrating as well.”

The Goodguys Nationals is one of hundreds of car events taking place on or around July 9, 2010, the official date designated as Collector Car Appreciation Day. The Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) and the Automotive Restoration Market Organization (ARMO) developed a list of events nationwide on July 9th and posted it at http://www.sema.org/sema-enews/2010/21/collector-car-appreciation-day-grows

A.B. 1740 defeated on senate floor

June 16, 2010

As many of you have been reading about and hearing about the past few months, yesterday was the senate vote for Assembly Bill 1740 – the bill brought forth by assemblyman Kevin Jeffries relating to increasing the number of annual kit car registrations from 500 to 750 in the state of California. The bill was defeated. We received the following note from assemblyman Jeffries office explaining the defeat and what’s next.

Goodguys would like to thank everyone who rallied behind this bill and took the time to call, fax, write and e-mail California assembly members in support of this bill and our beloved hobby and industry. We will keep you posted on any new bills or developments through the year. Here is the note from Jeffries’ office:

Yesterday, AB 1740 (Jeffries), relating to increasing the number of annual kit car registrations from 500 to 750, failed on a party line vote, 3-5. Three Republicans, Vice-Chair Bob Huff (Diamond Bar), Tom Harman (Huntington Beach), and Roy Ashburn (Bakersfield) voted in favor of the measure. Five Democrats, Chair Alan Lowenthal (Long Beach), Christine Kehoe (San Diego), Fran Pavley (Santa Monica), Mark DeSaulnier (Walnut Creek) and Joe Simitian (San Jose) voted against the bill.

2010 Hot Rod of the Year Winner!

June 15, 2010

The ’32 Ford hot rod roadster of Floyd Williams took home the Goodguys 2010 Gearstar Hot Rod of the Year award at the 22nd Hot Rod Nationals in Indianapolis. Williams, a long time Southern California native recently pulled up his roots and settled in Austin, Texas. With it’;s burgeoning traditional hot rod culture, Austin is the perfect home the newest Hot Rod of the Year.

Floyd grew up drag racing at OCIR and other so-cal strips so his goal with the car was to build a 60’s style street/strip roadster. Enter Dave Lane of Fast Lane Rod Shop Donahue, IA. Once Lane was commissioned to build the car, the trio of Williams, his son Kevin and Lane set out to build the ultimate hot rod roadster.

With the trio’s vision, artist Eric Brockmeyer rendered a period correct interior which incorporated a combination of bare bones basics, diamond pleated leather seats and the right amount of lightning holes. With black being the only color for a true hot rod, DuPont Super Jet Black single stage was chosen. With the interior and paint settled, attention was turned to the drive train. A small black Chevy topped with Hilborn stack injection was chosen. Vintage 60s features include a Joe Hunt magneto, Milodon oil pan and Corvette Valve covers. The 400+ ponies are routed through a Tremec 5 speed to a ladder bar supported Winter’s quick change. The big window polished Halibrand rear wheels are wrapped in Hurst cheater slicks for that perfect So-Cal drag look.

The car gets its intimidating rake courtesy of a Magnum 5 inch dropped axle with So Cal hairpins. A So-Cal front brake kit stops the polished kidney bean Real Wheels. All the fancy brightwork is courtesy of Jon Wright’s custom chrome plating in Grafton, OH.

Look for the Williams’ roadster at the L.A. Roadster’s Father’s Day show in Pomona, the Goodguys 13th PPG Nationals in Columbus, the Goodguys 24th West Coast Nationals, Goodguys Midwestern Nationals in Kansas City and the season-ending Southwest Nationals in Scottsdale, AZ.

The finalists for this year’s Gearstar Hot Rod of the Year included Bill Kullbom, Burlington, IA (’30 Ford), Dick McCann, Wheaton, IL (’29 Ford), Floyd Williams, Austin, TX (’32 Ford roadster), Donny Friese, Beach Park, IL (’32 Ford) and Jeff Kuhn, Plainfield, IL (’34 Ford).

Indy Race Results – Bridges, Gallen Take Home Big Wins!

June 15, 2010

O’Reilly Raceway park, Clermont, IN – The stage doesn’t get any bigger than Indy when it comes to motorsports. For the country’s elite vintage drag racing teams, the Goodguys Hot Rod Nationals at O’Reilly Raceway Park is their one chance per year to say they too won Indy.

Per tradition, the Goodguys Hot Rod Nationals fills every inch but the paved oval on O’Reilly Raceway Park’s expansive property. It’s wall to wall chrome, flames, nitro fumes and candy paint. With 10 eliminator classes and exhibitions by the Geezer Gasser’s and Nostalgia Super Stockers, this year’s event kept the drag strip busy all day.

The Nostalgia Top Fuel field was the largest it’s ever been here in Indy with 12 fire breathing front motored monsters doing battle for a precious spot in the 8 car field. Paced by Denver Schutz’ 5.857, the field featured a mix of California cars, Midwest cars and the New York based “Nitrodiction” entry of Jim Didio, driven by 2-time Goodguys Indy winner Howard Haight.

Schutz again fired the biggest shot in eliminations clicking off a 5.844 in his first round race against Okahoma’s Odie Coker. Howard Haight legged out the opening round’s only other sub 6-second lap, running a 5.966 to dispatch San Jose, California’s Brendan Murry. When Rick Rodgers in Butch Blair’s “Fugowie” had to be shut off behind the burnout box in his semi final race with Schutz, the Fresno raisin farmer simply took the light and idled down the track, saving valuable parts and pieces for a final round match up with Midwest favorite Randy Bridges who woke everyone up with a 5.923 @ 244.03 semi final shot against Haight. So with the final round being a true East vs West showdown between Virden, Illinois’ Randy Bridges and California’s Denver Schutz, the stage was set for what should have been a classic battle. Unfortunately for Schutz, he got out of his smooth starting line routine, deep staged the car then left a tad early drawing a shocking red light on the tree while running 5.937. Bridges drove on through for a 6.03 @ 226mph win.

Bridges tasted victory here in 2003 when he defeated “Radar” Roger Lechtenberg, but this win was sweeter. “It’s so nice to see everyone come up and congratulating the team,” he said. “Car owner Joe Hendricks is the one who makes this all happen. He pays the bills, tunes the motor, drives the truck – he does it all. This is his baby – I’m just lucky enough to drive it.”

In Nostalgia Funny Car, 8 retro funnies dry hopped and thundered their way into the hearts of the fans. Stepping up to lead qualifying was Grand Blanc, Michigan’s Shawn Bowen who grabbed the pole position with a 6.038 @ 226.66 in his ’77 Pontiac Forebird but it was only a matter of time before the five-second runs began appearing on the scoreboards.

Peter and Ashby Gallen’s purple “Poverty Stricken” ’74 Vega was the first to step into the five second zone unloading a 5.904 @ 240.25 in a first round defeat of Steve Nichols’ Camaro. Gallen then dispatched of Indy’s Paul Romine in the semis in a great race which saw the winner post a 5.906 to Romine’s 5.939. In the final, Gallen faced first-time Goodguys finalist Anthony Bronge and the “Punisher” ’69 Camaro out of Marengo, Illinois.

The Funny Car final turned out to be close with Gallen turning in his 3rd consecutive 5.90 pass going 5.909 @ 241.97 to Bronge’s game 6.032 @ 238.81. This was Gallen’s 3rd Funny Car win in 2 years racing with Goodguys.

Both the 7.00 index and 7.50 index Pro Comp classes provided fans with great side by side racing and finishes decided by mere thousandths of a second.

In the Freedom Racing Engines-sponsored Pro Comp I division, number 4 qualifier Don Slout used consistency and a little luck to pick up his first-ever Goodguys hemi Oscar. Running as quick as 7.094 in eliminations, Slout got to the finals to face multi-time Goodguys event winner Richard Edwards and his brightly colored ’48 Fiat. Going in, Edwards was a big favorite but like the Top Fuel Final, the favorite’s role bit Richards when he red-lit giving the win to a popular underdog. Once he saw Edwards’ red light, Slout coasted to a slow victory, picking up an additional $500 cash from Freedom Racing Engines for the win.

In Pro Comp II, it looked as though the final would be a classic East vs West showdown with #1 qualifier Rich Barnard of Ohio against California’s Bruce McDowell. McDowell ended up blowing his engine in a 2nd round win which paved the way for John Bartos to reach the final to face Barnard. Barnard soloed to the class win when Bartos broke after his burnout but still ran it all the way through for a 7.535 winner.

The full bodied 8.50 index B/GAS category belonged to Lawrenceburg, Indiana’s Rob Davis and his supercharged ’67 Nova all weekend long. Davis qualified on the pole, ran a near perfect 8.506 in the semi finals and squeaked out a close win against Earl Scott’s ’34 Ford in the final logging a 8.527 @ 155.92 to Scott’s game 8.535 @ 157.34

Other event winners included Roger Lechtenberg (Top Fuel B), Don Nave (Nostalgia Comp), C.S. Bogshaw (Nostalgia Gas), Linda Riha (Hot Rod Eliminator), Brian Schimmel (1/8th Mile Hot Rod Shootout) and Roger Burman (1/8th Mile Street Rod Shootout).

The next stop on the 2010 Goodguys Vintage Drag Racing circuit is the 9th Blue Suede Cruise August 20-22 at Summit Motorsports Park in Norwalk, OH. For more visit http://www.ggvintagedragracing.com

A.B. 1740 Heads to the Senate Floor This Tuesday, June 15th! Urgent Action Needed!

June 15, 2010

As you read right here on Hot News, legislation (A.B. 1740) to increase the registration limit for exempted specially constructed vehicle (kit car) registrations from 500 to 750 vehicles per year was approved in May by the full California Assembly. A.B .1740 will now be considered by the California Senate Transportation and Housing Committee on Tuesday, June 15. That’s just a few days from now!

Now is the time to act if you’re a hot rodder or an enthusiast and you reside in California. Please write a letter, send a fax, send an e-mail or make a quick phone call to the members of the Senate Transportation Committee (List provided below) immediately to request their support for A.B. 1740

A.B. 1740 Quick Facts
- Under current California policy, specially constructed vehicles that do not receive one of the 500 sequence numbers are subject to a “muddied” titling, registration and smog check process.
- A.B. 1740 will help mitigate the “black market” value of these 500 sequence numbers which are often sold on e-bay and other on-line auction sites.
- A.B. 1740 recognizes the minimal impact specially constructed vehicles have on air quality.
- A.B. 1740 recognizes the fact that specially constructed vehicles are overwhelmingly well-maintained and infrequently driven.
- A.B. 1740 will help allow vehicle owners to confidently take advantage of a newly-enacted vehicle registration amnesty program for specially constructed vehicles that were previously registered or classified incorrectly. Under the new law, the DMV will grant amnesty from prosecution to vehicle owners if certain conditions are met, including the owner filing a completed application with the department.

DON’T DELAY! Please contact members of the Senate Transportation and Housing Committee today to urge support for A.B. 1740.

Ironworks Speed & Kustom of Bakersfi eld, CA is heading up the build and the Experi-Metal company, producers of the ‘55 Chevy body, will have the ‘55 to Ironworks by mid May.

The heart of CleanAir ’55 is the emissions-legal LS3 E-Rod motor from General Motors. From Pleasanton, the car will be shipped to Kenny Davis Hotrods in Rogers, Arkansas where the all steel convertible will be covered in bright red PPG paint. The next stop will be the Recovery Room in Plattsmouth, Nebraska where Tracy Weaver will build and install the custom interior and top. After the interior is buttoned up, its back to Ironworks in Bakersfi eld California for final assembly. Goodguys will then take the car to Sacramento to work with the California State titling and emission department to show how the process of getting this type of vehicle legally titled and on the road in California.

CleanAir ‘55 will debut at the Goodguys 2nd Spring Nationals in Scottsdale, Arizona in March 2011 and will then be taken to 20 Goodguys National events across the country.
