‘Magnatude” Makes History in Pleasanton!

August 29, 2010

Jerry Magnuson’s sleek and stylish ‘Magnatude” ’32 Muroc roadster, hand formed by Marcel and designed by Chip Foose was named America’s Most Beautiful Street Rod presented by Hushpower at the 24th West Coast Nationals in Pleasanton. With the win, Magnatude made it a clean sweep this year winning all three major street rod awards offered by Goodguys. In April the car won the Goodguys Street Rod d’Elegance crown and was named Goodguys/Classic Instruments Street Rod of the Year in Columbus. In being named Goodguys America’s Most Beautiful Street Rod, it marked the first time a car has swept all three coveted awards in the same calendar year.

“Magnatude” is the picture and beauty, grace and performance featuring an LS-1 Chevy with a intercooled Magnacharger (of course!), Tremec 6 speed w/ polished Kugel 9”, Kugel I.F.S & I.R.S., custom Kugel chassis, chopped Carson top, DuVall windshield, hidden headlights, custom dash by Magnuson, Jim Griffin upholstery, tunneled seats and countless other subtle tricks. The paint is two-tone butterscotch pearl with champagne metallic. In traditional So-Cal hot rod fashion, the car features one off Foose designed “bigs and little’s” – 17×7” in front and 20×10” out back wrapped in Scorpion Zero rubber.

Well known throughout the automotive aftermarket for his “Magnacharger” super charger kits, Magnuson was humbled by his third major award this season. “We’ve had a lot of fun with the car this year,” he said. “Receiving an award like this here in Pleasanton competing against the best cars is as good as it gets,” he said.

The top 5 finalists for America’s Most Beautiful Street Rod presented by Flowmaster included Brent Scheider, Pleasanton, CA (’37 Ford Cabriolet), Jerry Magnuson, Ventura, CA (’32 Ford roadster), Cindy Warn, Aurora, OR (1939 Ford), Bill West, Tracy, CA (1939 LaSalle), John Delahunt, Rough & Ready, CA (1937 Ford Woodie).

Speed by Spectre Streamliner flies on the Salt!

August 19, 2010

Amir Rosenbaum, founder and CEO of Speed by Spectre (the official air intake system of Goodguys) took the company car out for a Sunday drive at the Bonneville salt flats earlier this week and wound up not only getting his competition license but pushed the 499 ci twin turbo-charged streamliner to a new ABGS class record of 356mph! Not bad for his first competitive runs on the salt!

The Spectre team has had quite a week on the salt. On Monday morning, Rosenbaum was accelerating past 300mph when he heard a loud “Bang” inside the cockpit forcing a quick shut down. It turns out the car hit a pot hole or large chunk of salt which tore off the entire belly pan of the ‘liner. That’s when former Goodguys Trendsetter Troy Trepanier stepped in and tig welded the panels back together to send them back out!

Later Monday afternoon, Rosenbaum blasted through the course exit at an incredible 366mph! Simply put, the Spectre team is representing the hot rodding industry in fine style out on the salt! The company has set up a great blog detailing all the information about their journey this year as well as photos and videos. For more, visit http://spectreperformance.com/blog

And remember, you can always support Speed by Spectre’s land speed racing efforts by buying more of their high quality parts!

Moal’s GATTO Coming to 24th West Coast Nationals

August 13, 2010

“Gatto,” a daring, blue Ferrari 250-powered aluminum-bodied coupe – the latest coachwork creation from Moal Coachbuilders of Oakland, Calfornia – will be on display inside the Moal booth at the 24th West Coast Nationals presented by Flowmaster August 27-29 at the Pleasanton Fairgrounds! The car made its world debut on Friday, August 13th, at the Quail Lodge Motorsports Gathering in Carmel Valley, CA.

Nearly three years in the making, this hand-fabricated creation unites exterior themes from late ’50s Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, Abarth Zagato and Maserati sports performance vehicles in a modern, highly-tractable and road-ready performance package.

The 2,300-pound Gatto rides on a race-bred semi-monocoque chassis. Hand-formed aluminum body panels are affixed to the chassis components via Moal’s specially-developed superleggera (Italian for “super light”) process, one in which panels are crimped to a sub-frame matrix.

Pumping out 300-horsepower at 7,500 rpm, the Ferrari V-12 250 GTO specification motor is hooked to a Tremac 5-speed manual transmission and is topped by six Weber carburetors. Polished Borrani wire knock-off wheels unite the car’s European sports car lineage.

Built for Marin area investment manager Bill Grimsley, the Gatto fulfills a criteria for personal and spirited motoring pleasure. Everything aboard from large, simple custom dash gauges, to custom-fitted leather seats and modern air conditioning reflect functional simplicity and reliability.

The Moal enterprise, which next year celebrates a century of Moal family dedication to the automotive arts in Oakland, has garnered world attention for carrying forward into the 21st Century a decidedly early 20th Century coachbuilding craft – the early carrozzeria technique of hand-building motor cars through a number of specialized houses and techniques, everything from chassis and bodywork specialists to engine builders and upholstery artisans.
Stop by the Moal booth in Pleasanton to see Gatto up close and talk to the Moal family about their products and services. You’ll be glad you did!

Goodguys Racing Camaro Back in Action!

August 13, 2010

Pleasanton, CA – The Goodguys Racing Pro Mod ’69 Camaro driven by Marc Meadors is hitting the road this month with high hopes and big dreams. The first stop on the team’s inner mountain west mini tour will be at Firebird Raceway in Boise, Idaho this weekend for the 39th annual Pepsi Nightfire Nationals. Idaho’s premier racing event runs Thursday, August 12th through Sunday, August 15th. Meadors will take the Tim McAmis-built bright silver ’69 Camaro into battle in the West Coast Outlaw Pro Mod class, taking on the likes of Brett Williamson, Jay Diedrich, Rod Pearce, Rod Burbage, Dennis Radford and many other Pro Mod hitters.

From Boise, the team heads east to Morrison, Colorado for the Super Chevy Show August 20-22 at Bandimere Speedway where they will compete in the “Nitro Coupe/Pro Mod” exhibition. Meadors has fond memories of the last Super Chevy Show he ran, taking home the event win at Auto Club Dragway in Fontana, CA back in March 2009.

The team’s war chest is full of bullets and spare parts as they attempt to take home all the marbles at both tour stops. Competing with a Red Line Oil equipped 451-inch Brad Anderson hemi with a roots blower, the car has run a best of 6.16 @ 240mph. The team’s best performance this year was a semi-final finish at the Funny Car Fever event at Sacramento Raceway. With that kind of performance and Meadors’ lightning quick and ultra consistent reaction times, the Goodguys Racing ’69 Camaro warrants serious respect.

The Goodguys Racing crew of Jason Bunker, Jeff Accacian, Billy Fereira and Andy Fereira are poised and ready to make the team’s first trip to Firebird Raceway and Bandimere Speedway a successful one. The team will also have brand new tee shirts for sale at the trailer as well as hero cards for the kids. For more visit www.goodguysracing.com

Humpy Wheeler Has a New Hot Rod!

August 10, 2010

H.A. “Humpy” Wheeler, the former C.O.O., President and GM of Lowe’s Motor Speedway in Charlotte is in the middle of building a 1949 Jaguar sedan for the street. Long a friend of Goodguys and the man responsible for bringing the Goodguys Southwest Nationals to Lowe’s Motor Speedway (now in its 17th year) , built his first hot rod, a 1937 Ford when he was just 15 years old. He’s been hot rodding and promoting stock car races ever since.

His latest project, dubbed “Hemi Cat” will feature modern day Chrysler 300 running gear underneath a two-tone ’49 Jag sedan. It will be the only Jag of its kind that we can recall. Astonishingly, the tread width and wheelbase of the Chrysler running gear is nearly identical to that of a stock ’49 Jag, although Wheeler and his build team at Klassic Rides in Denver, North Carolina will widen the fenders four inches on all four corners.

The body and paint work is pretty much finished. The process of mating body and chassis, wiring and plumbing the car and other intricacies remain but Wheeler is anxious to get behind the wheel of his latest creation and cruise the streets of Charlotte by next summer!

Stay tuned for further updates on Hemi Cat and if you’re looking for an outstanding book to read, look no further than Wheeler’s recently released “Growing Up NASCAR: Racing’s Most Outrageous Promoter Tells All.” The Motorbooks release is available at Barnes & Noble Booksellers, Borders as well as Amazon.com

Second Generation Hot Rodder Ready for 2010 Speedweek

August 10, 2010

Danville, CA – Justin Walsh grew up in Danville, California surrounded on all sides by hot rodders and hell raisers. His father Tom, former top fuel racer turned street rodder and one of the three founding members of the infamous Danville Dukes, passed on the speed gene to Justin and his younger brother Brandon at a very young age. The Walsh boys grew up going to drag races, rod runs and eventually out to the enchanting white expanse of the Bonneville Salt Flats. Once a month, their home garage on Como Way in Danville served as the “Duke’s Club House” – a sacred shrine where club members cut loose and cut each other zero slack.

It was here in Danville, at the Duke’s Club House that Justin realized his dream of racing at Bonneville. Together with his dad and uncle, team Walsh built a bright red blown gas roadster which Justin eventually drove to speeds over 220mph (as well as a few hi- speed donuts!).

Now 36, Walsh has mastered the art the art of finessing a land speed car through the traps as well as his other passion – fine foods. The proprietor of Norm’s Grille on Hartz Ave in downtown Danville, Walsh will embark on a new mission next week as he’s set to drive not one but two hot rods in the 62nd annual SCTA Speed Week, scheduled for August 14-20 on the hallowed grounds of the Bonneville Salt Flats.

Looking for new records in A Fuel Roadster as well as the Blown Fuel Coupe class, Walsh will pilot the Mariani Farms A/FR ’34 Ford Roadster then strap into George Poteet’s “Blowfish” ’69 Plymouth Barracuda.

Dennis Mariani spotted Walsh’s driving talents in 2008, commissioning him to drive his Mariani Farms ’34 Ford roadster. At last year’s Speed Week, Walsh went 253 mph (on a 235mph class record) with carburetors and race gas. This year the team has switched to an electronic fuel injected big block Chevy opting to run the A Fuel Roadster class with sights on 270mph. The current class record for A/FR is 257mph.
