2010 Muscle Machine of the Year Winner!

October 8, 2010

Dennis DeCamp’s 1970 Ford Mustang has been named Goodguys 2010 Detroit Speed Muscle Machine of the Year. The red Mustang with superior fit and finish was spotted sliding around several autocrosses this year and was selected as a finalist at the Orange County Get-Together back in May. It’s the second Terrific 12 award for DeCamp in three years. In 2007, his Ferrari-influenced 1932 Ford took home the Classic Instruments Street Rod of the Year title in Columbus.

Built by Barry’s Speed Shop (who also built the ’32 roadster), DeCamp’s potent pony looks as good as it runs. The car is covered in deep layers of House of Kolor Blue Blood Red with metallic gold skunk stripes. The sport suspension combines a front end from Global West, a TCI Trilink and QA1 shocks. A 13-inch big brake kit from Baer stops the 18 & 19 inch Schott wheels on a dime. Brown Italian leather by Gabe’s covers the 2007 Mustang bucket seats. Under the flawless hood lies a completely polished 548-horsepower Roush 427.

Aside from all the car’s impressive bells and whistles, it’s a true driver. Dennis took off from his home in West Covina and drove the car to the Goodguys Pacific Northwest Nationals in Puyallup, Washington and when he heard he had won the Detroit Speed Muscle Machine of the Year award he said he’d be driving it over to Scottsdale for the season-ender. This car is all show and all go!

Like the other winners, DeCamp will receive a customized toolbox courtesy of Snap-on as well as his Detroit Speed Muscle Machine of the Year award while in Scottsdale at the season-ending 13th Southwest Nationals, November 19-21 at Westworld.

Fellow award finalists included Jack Hodson, Glendale, AZ (’67 Camaro), Matt Alcala, San Diego, CA (’69 Camaro), Mark Turner, Hermitage, TN (’69 Camaro), Mark Allen, Mesa, AZ (’67 Camaro), Doug Renner, Orange County, CA (‘69 Camaro), Roger Burman, Rockwell City, IA (’71 Plymouth ‘Cuda), Randy Johnson, Kewaskim, WI (’70 Camaro), Bob Bertelsen, Columbiana, OH (’72 Firebird), Mark Dinkel, Hays, KS (’70 Nova) and Terry Neuville, Prairieville, LA (’68 Camaro).

Congratulations to Dennis and all finalists!

2010 Truck of the Year-Early Winner!

October 8, 2010

George Poteet’s “Miller Hauler Special” Indy-inspired ’32 Ford pickup has been named Goodguys 2010 Street Rod Headquarters Truck of the Year –Early. The Truck of the Year is divided into two categories – “Early” (trucks through 1952 vintage) and “Late” (1953 through 1972).

Poteet’s no stranger to winning major awards in the rod & custom industry. He’s a multiple winner of the Goodguys Classic Instruments Street Rod of the Year but also likes to go fast. Real fast! His “Blowfish” ’69 Plymouth Barracuda is one of the fastest cars on the planet. His latest creation, the “Miller Hauler Special” is incredibly detailed and masterfully built. The early Ford pickup was designed by Brian Stinger with machine work and final assembly by the Rad Rides by Troy Team.

The truck has what seems to be a million thoughtfully placed louvers and mind boggling amounts of milled aluminum, chrome and custom fabbed parts and pieces. The focal point is the polished custom grill built by Steve Moal. The body features a wedge chop, stretched cowl, custom hood and hood sides by Stinger and a custom box out back. The engine is a 201 cubic inch Donavan 4 banger linked to a Tremec T5. The truck rolls on a genie deuce frame with custom front horns. A Magnum 5 inch drop tube axle insures a killer stance. The Brakes are 12-inch Bendix style with custom machined fins which stop the 19 inch gold Dayton wires. Sitting in the custom Stinger-built seats gives you a birds-eye view of the immaculate Diamond T dash featuring Classic Instruments gauges and MG steering wheel.

Poteet will receive a customized toolbox courtesy of Snap-on as well as his Street Rod HQ Truck of the Year of the Year – Early award while in Scottsdale at the season-ending 13th Southwest Nationals, November 19-21 at Westworld.

Fellow award finalists included the trucks of Ricky “Slim” Kircharr, Northpoint, AL (’53 Chevy), Steve Frisbee, Portland, OR (’33 Dodge), Jimmy Heravtin, Warrington, MO (’30 Ford), Tom Stephens, Williams, CA (’48 Ford) and Jerry Holbrook, Haymarket, VA (’41 Willys).

Congratulations to Poteet and all fellow finalists!

2010 Kustom of the Year Winner!

October 8, 2010

The sleek 1935 Ford Kustom of renowned Hollywood tattoo artist “Bugs” has been named Goodguys 2010 Grundy Kustom of the Year.

Built by Troy Ladd and his team at Hollywood Hot Rods, the car originally started life as a humpback sedan but was meticulously transformed into a chopped 3 window coupe. All body panels were either handmade or modified to create a longer, “Zephyr” style Westergard-inspired kustom.

In addition to the chopped top, the low and sleek look was achieved by the rear 8 inches and adding 10 inches to the handmade rear fenders. Fender skirts and running boards were also fabricated while a Bentley hood skin was used for the decklid area. The headlights are from a Chevy truck, and the distinctive grill came from a White truck. The car was finished off in a ruby brown metallic. It sits on a custom frame with Ridetech goodies, a 4-link rear suspension with a Ford 9-inch and a tried and true 350/350 combo.

The Art Deco theme was carried throughout the interior thanks to a custom dash featuring a Chrysler Imperial gauge cluster and clock. The steering wheel is from a ’46 Pontiac and has been modified with a hand carved center. Also – custom carved are the knobs, shifter and pedals. Dave Martinez handled the stitching chores with ease, utilizing sculpted panels.

Bugs will receive a customized toolbox courtesy of Snap-on as well as his Grundy Kustom of the Year award while in Scottsdale at the season-ending 13th Southwest Nationals, November 19-21 at Westworld. Fellow award finalists included Brian Zelenka, Lyons, IL (‘53 Chevy), Tony Feil, Whitehouse Station, NJ (’40 Pontiac), Bob Davidson, Graham, WA (’50 Ford) and Everett Plata, Lockport, IL (’50 Ford convt).

Congratulations to Bugs and all finalists!

2010 Custom Rod of the Year Winner!

October 8, 2010

Kenneth Davis’ 1955 Chevy Nomad “Fastmad” has been named Goodguys 2010 Vintage Air Custom Rod of the Year. The gorgeous custom Nomad was chosen as a finalist at the Heartland Nationals in Des Moines, Iowa this summer. Kenneth is the father of Kenny Davis, proprietor of Kenny Davis Hot Rods in Rogers, Arkansas.

Smooth can only begin to describe this really red, really righteous ’55 Nomad. The laser-straight body remains mostly stock, save for the shaved emblems, tucked bumpers and billet grille. The custom engine bay features smoothed panels with a contrasting pewter color to showcase the rumpty-rump 454 big block Chevy mill.

The saddle brown leather interior sports a custom console. The wagon rolls in style on 18 and 20-inch Legacy II wheels from Billet Specialties. For the win, Davis will receive a customized toolbox courtesy of Snap-on as well as his Custom Rod of the Year of the Year award while in Scottsdale at the season-ending 13th Southwest Nationals, November 19-21 at Westworld.

Davis’ fellow finalists for the Custom Rod of the Year award included Bucky Gay, Highland, UT (’66 Chevelle), Scotty Gray, LaHabra Heights, CA (’55 Nash Wagon), Dick Bates, Easly, SC (’62 Chevy Bel Air), Bill Pendleton, New Castle, PA (’61 Chevy) and Brent Elsen, Sioux City, IA (’66 Chevelle).
