California’s Mary Pozzi will represent Hotchkis Sport Suspension in the Goodguys 1st Sponsor Shootout AutoCross, Sunday July 10th in Columbus, OH. She’ll be behind the wheel of her ’72 Camaro RS – which she proudly refers to as “her favorite car in the entire world.” That’s saying something as the leading lady in Goodguys AutoCross has driven many different cars to many different championships over the years.
Pozzi is an expert at AutoCross. She’s driven both front wheel drive and rear wheel drive automobiles to (count ‘em) 11 SCCA National Championships in Solo competition! She’s also competed in specialty events such as winning the 2011 Goodguys Editor’s Shootout earlier this year in Del Mar as well as a nice finish in the 2009 Optima Batteries Ultimate Street Car Invitational. The lady with a kind demeanor and warm smile in the pits is an absolute monster on track! She’s precise, always under control and has bagged multiple Street Machine class wins in Goodguys AutoCross competition over the past 4 years. But what makes her really happy is teaching beginners the ins and outs of AutoCross competition. “It makes me feel warm and fuzzy,” she said.”When I see their times improve and their smiles get wider after taking a checkered flag it’s so cool.”
Mary’s bright orange 2nd gen Camaro runs an LS2 with a Spectre cold air intake system. The power is transmitted to the asphalt via a T56 Magnum six-speed transmission. Her suspension, which features some “neat Hotchkis Sport Suspension bits and pieces” also includes RideTech adjustable shocks and Baer brakes. The wheels are 18” Forgeline wrapped in Falken rubber. Anvil Auto supplied the lightweight carbon fiber body panels. JCG Restoration and Custom in Oxnard, CA gets the credit for the brilliant orange paint.
Mary’s got more than a puncher’s chance to win the Sponsor Shootout but she’s also looking forward to simply attending the Goodguys 14th PPG Nationals presented by Bridgestone. “The Goodguys events are my favorite,” she said. “Thousands of beautiful cars and an AutoCross too? It’s always a great time.”

Detroit Speed & Engineering Co-Founder Kyle Tucker hopes to bring home the top prize during the Goodguys 1st Sponsor Shootout AutoCross, Sunday July 10th in Columbus, Ohio for his sponsor BF Goodrich. With the industry’s top companies and top autocross drivers on hand it won’t be easy but this is one man who relishes a challenge.
In Columbus, Tucker will be behind the wheel of his trusty 1970 Chevy Camaro DSE Test Car. The blue beast is set up to corner sporting a Detroit Speed Hydroformed Front Subframe, DSE QUADRA Link and Mini-Tubs. Power is courtesy of a hi-revving Mast Motorsports LS7. The 3-piece 5 spoke wheels are wrapped in BFGoodrich KDW Tires (Front: 295/35R18, Rear: 335/30R18).
Tucker’s driver’s resume is as impressive as they come including multiple Goodguys Autocross Championships in the Street Machine division, a seat in Team BFG’s Baja 1000 entry in 2010, multiple Dirt Late Model and Dirt Midget Wins and more. In 2000, he and Stacy built the Goodguys Street Machine of the Year – a bright yellow ’69 Camaro.
Not only is he fast on the track, he was fast in academics as well, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from University of Missouri – Rolla. A stint at General Motors as a suspension development engineer followed before opening Detroit Speed & Engineering with his wife Stacy.
One of Tucker’s signature on-track traits makes him easy to identify even if you can’t see him. He usually manages to coax more thunder from his Mast Motorsports prepped LS7 than any of his competitors. It’s a sweet sound we’ve all become accustomed to!

Mike Maier, The pride of Hayward, California will proudly fly the Bridgestone banner in the upcoming Goodguys Sponsor Shootout Autocross, Sunday, July 10th at the Ohio Expo Center. The Sponsor Shootout features entries from all 12 Goodguys AutoCross sponsors. The event is a highlight of the closing day of the Goodguys 14th PPG Nationals presented by Bridgestone.
Maier was on track to be a racer since birth. The youngest of the three sons born to Maier Racing Enterprises (MRE) owner, Bill Maier, Mike grew up racing on the autocross circuit. Throughout the years, Mike and MRE have etched their names in the record books by racing, building and servicing the Ford performance market. When he’s not on an autocross track, Mike can be found at anything from a USAC Midget race to a Vintage race, driving and setting up cars for fellow competitors.
The list of Maier’s accomplishments behind the wheel is simply astounding. It’s pretty clear he’s the man to beat in Columbus. He’s won three consecutive championships in the SCCA “C Prepared” National run offs. He was C Prepared Champion of the SCCA American Autocross from ’03-’06 among other titles. He still holds the track record at two California ovals from his days of driving the USAC Ford Focus Midget to coincide with his multiple Feature wins. He’s won the Street Machine class at Goodguys AutoCross’s a half dozen times. He’s fast, he’s focused and he has a brand new toy to flog in Columbus.
Although his blue 1966 Mustang might look familiar on the outside, it’s a whole new ball game when it comes to the drive train and suspension set up. A newly installed Roush Yates Nationwide 358ci NASCAR engine is backed by a NASCAR spec 4-speed manual gearbox from C&R Racing. The beastly engine is cooled by a custom radiator from C&R Racing. The car will utilize a slightly new front suspension from Maier Racing, including shocks from JRI and a newly designed tubular A-arm/coil over set up. The rear suspension is also of Mike Maier’s own design. It utilizes a laid over coil over in the trunk, with a Watt’s Link and Torque Arm.
Maier will run Bridgestone’s Potenza RE-11 tires for the ultimate grip. Catch him if you can!

Alan Johnson and Curt Ukasik, two of hot rodding’s star builders and former Goodguys Trendsetter award winners will be on hand at this year’s 14th PPG Nationals presented by Bridgestone July 8-10 in Columbus, Ohio to select the coveted Builder’s Choice awards. Both Johnson and Ukasik will be onsite throughout the weekend in Columbus to hand pick ten awards each for a total of 20 Builder’s Choice awards at the biggest Goodguys event of the year!
Johnson opened Johnson’s Hot Rod Shop in Gadsden, Alabama in 1993 building numerous landmark rods, customs and muscle cars including the “G Force Cuda” and Doug Cooper’s “Deucenberg B400” among others. He was named Goodguys Trendsetter in the year 2000.
Ukasik burst on the scene several years back when his company RPM Hot Rods made a splash by building the 2009 Hot Rod of the Year – Bill Steel’s bitchin Model A. Ukasik and his team then built the “BOSS SNAKE” Goodguys Giveaway car in 2010. He was named Goodguys Trendsetter at the 2010 SEMA Show. With a vision to build cutting edge cars that combine reliability, style and extreme performance, he has taken RPM Hot Rods to the forefront of the industry.
The 14th PPG Nationals Builder’s Choice special parking area will be open for participants Friday, July 8th and Saturday, July 9th. All cars considering a run for the Goodguys 2011 Classic Instruments Street Rod of the Year and the Goodguys 2011 Optima Batteries Street Machine of the Year are required to park in the Builder’s Choice area both Friday and Saturday.

The Sponsor Shootout features entries from all 12 Goodguys AutoCross sponsors. The ‘Shootout is a highlight of the closing day of the Goodguys 14th PPG Nationals presented by Bridgestone.
An engineer at Detroit Speed & Engineering, Mathews graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering Automotive Design from Kettering University in Flint, Michigan. He began his career at Harley-Davidson as a powertrain project engineer.
When it comes to seat time in a performance vehicle, nobody in this year’s ‘Shootout field has more than Mathews. He has 13 NASCAR starts to his credit, including one top-5, 2 top-10′s, 7-top 15′s, and 1 pole. He’s had 9 ARCA starts, including 2 top-5′s, 10 top-10′s and has qualified top-10 6 times in 9 attempts. When it comes to the Cones, Mathews has won numerous events on the Goodguys AutoCross circuit. Look at this way. They’ll have to push hard, really, really hard to beat him.
Mathews will pilot Detroit Speed’s ’63 Nova Test Car which runs a Detroit Speed Front Frame, DSE QUADRA Link and DSE Mini-Tubs. Power comes from a potent Mast Motorsports LS7. It sits just right on HRE 595 RS wheels and BFGoodrich KDW Tires (Front: 255/35R18, Rear: 295/35R18).

Pleasanton, CA – The Goodguys Rod & Custom Association has announced an all new Sunday-only promotion for three events this summer and fall. The “Sunday Get-Together” promotion welcomes American made or American powered cars and trucks of all years, makes and models to the events on Sunday only. The three events scheduled to host the new Goodguys “Sunday Get-Together” include the Goodguys 5th PEAK Chicagoland Nationals, August 12-14 at Chicagoland Speedway, the Goodguys 10th Midwestern Nationals, September 2-4 at Kansas Speedway and the Goodguys 18th Southeastern Nationals, October 28-30 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
Any late model show car can participate in these three events on Sunday-only so long as it’s American made or American powered. “We’re really excited to be swinging open the event gates to the late model American made and American powered cars in Chicago, Kansas City and Charlotte,” said Goodguys VP of Event Operations Harry Daviess. “We have done Get-Together style events for over 25 years in our hometown of Pleasanton, California and it’s an outstanding format for car guys. The ‘Big Three’ build some awesome new muscle cars and hot rods. It will be something to see a ’69 Camaro parked next to a 2010 Camaro. Same with the Dodge Challengers, Ford Mustangs, GTO’s and others,” Daviess said. He also pointed out how well the classic car and old school hot rod & custom guys get along with late model owners. “All Goodguys are car guys at heart. This will further broaden the scope of the events allowing as many as six or seven generations of car people to participate in a Goodguys event.”
Goodguys will be making it easy for the newly welcomed participants to register. There will be a simple one day fee charged at registration for the later model cars. Goodguys will pick as many as 20 Sunday Get-Together awards and keep the AutoCross road course open on Sunday at these three events. A Sunday track cruise is also scheduled around each super speedway, allowing the new participants a chance to experience the thrill of traveling the hi banks in their car.
Bring out those late models for a Sunday drive!

July is shaping up to be a very busy month for old school hot rod builder and racer Roger Burman and it’s a good thing. The “Thrillbilly” himself thrives on competition. Whether it’s in the show car arena, on the motocross track, on the drag strip or out on the AutoCross course, Burman is and always has been driven to finish first.
Over the 4th of July weekend, he and his staff from Lakeside Rods and Rides will select the Goodguys Builder’s Choice awards at the 20th Heartland Nationals in Des Moines. The highly sought after polished aluminum headlights were designed and finished by Burman. They were milled from solid chunks of billet aluminum by J & B Microfinish of Pontiac, Illinois.
The following week things begin to really heat up as Burman will represent Gearstar Performance Transmissions in the 1st annual Goodguys Sponsor Shootout AutoCross, Sunday, July 10th at the Ohio Expo Center. He’ll be driving “Crusher,” an intimidating ’70 Camaro designed by DK Camaros he just finished building for Dave and Karen Leisinger. The last time Burman and the Leisinger’s teamed up on a Camaro they took home the Street Machine of the Year title with “Scar” – the killer orange’67.
Designed by DK Camaros, “Crusher” is a serious Muscle Machine. The first time Burman drove it around the cones came at this year’s Goodguys Colorado Nationals where it won the Street Machine class. A 700 horsepower LSR built by Warren Johnson Racing is backed by a billet aluminum Gearstar 400 transmission. The car rides on Detroit Speed suspension with BOZE Wheels and KDW rubber.
While we can’t be certain Burman and Gearstar will win the Sponsor Shootout, we know for a fact they will be fast and spectacular. The “Thrillbilly” wouldn’t have it any other way!

In continuing our look at the competitor’s for the 1st annual Goodguys Sponsor Shootout Autocross, scheduled for Sunday, July 10th at the Ohio Expo Center in Columbus, we find Stacy Tucker in the spotlight this week. She will represent Afco Racing in the ‘Shootout.
Tucker, Co-Owner of Detroit Speed & Engineering is a familiar face to the Goodguys AutoCross scene. You might also remember her as the 2007 Goodguys Woman of the Year.
Long before she was flogging her ’69 Camaro around the cones, she was a Boilermaker, graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering degree from Purdue University before earning a Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Her career at General Motors as a suspension development engineer paid big dividends for her and husband Kyle as they’ve risen to great heights in the automotive aftermarket industry with their cutting edge suspension components.
When she’s not working the Detroit Speed rig at events around the country, she races in the “American Iron” class in the National Auto Sport Association and always rides on BFGoodrich R1 tires. She’s also raced an SCCA Corvette in the ITE Class.
At Columbus, Tucker will have her bright blue ’69 Camaro, lovingly dubbed the “DSE Test Car” dressed in Afco livery. The lightning fast Camaro runs a Detroit Speed Hydroformed Front Subframe, Detroit Speed QUADRA Link and Detroit Speed Mini-Tubs. A Mast Motorsports LS3 provides ample power to the 3-Piece 5 Spoke wheels which of course are wrapped in BFGoodrich KDW Tires (Front: 275/35R18, Rear: 335/30R18).
Boys beware! Stacy’s coming with her A-Game!
