Norm Grabowski’s Comin’ to Nashville!

March 30, 2010

Hot rodding’s clown price, Norm Grabowski will serve as the Hot Rod Hero of the 5th Nashville Nationals, May 21-23 at LP Field in downtown Nashville. Look for the loveable, laughable legend behind the wheel of his latest automotive offering – a ’29 Nash adorned in typical Grabowski trim.

Norm has been one of hot rodding’s signature characters since the late 50s. He’s perhaps best known for his “Kookie T” ‘27 Ford roadster used in the television show 77 Sunset Strip.

The car was featured on the cover of the October, 1955 issue of Hot Rod Magazine and later in the April 29, 1957 issue of Life Magazine.

In the early 90s Norm rolled out ”Kookie II” doing a promotional tour that included a stop at the 1992 West Coast Nationals in Pleasanton.

More than just a hot rodder, Grabowski was and still is a superior craftsman and performer. He enjoyed hundreds of bit parts in both television and motion pictures in 1960s and 70s Los Angeles. He relocated to Lead Hill Arkansas in the mid 80s where he now focuses on his elaborate wood carvings. His “Norm Skulls” – elaborately carved and decorated shift knobs are highly sought after by rodders world wide. He’s considered one of the finest wood carvers in the country.

Don’t miss your chance to meet hot rod royalty in Nashville!

Hetfield’s “Slow Burn” wins 2010 West Coast Custom of the Year

March 28, 2010

James Hetfield’s elegant “Slow Burn” 1936 Auburn boat tail speedster was crowned Goodguys 2010 West Coast Custom of the Year today at the 28th All American Get-Together in Pleasanton. It was a landmark victory for Metallica’s front man who has a passion for custom automobiles. His 1937 Ford was a top five finalist at last year’s event.

Designed by Hetfield and Rick Dore with paint and body artistry by Darryl Hollenbeck of Vintage Color Studio, “Slow Burn” edged out of top class field of customs including Scott Bonowski’s ’50 Merc from Signal Hill, Richard Zocchi’s ’68 Dodge Polara from Walnut Creek, Lionel Duran’s ’60 Buick from Salinas and Dore’s other entry – a candy blue 1950 Cadillac.

With a unique blend of concourse style elegance and traditional custom flare, Hetfield’s Auburn had the crowd cheering. This marked the first time the car had been shown outdoors. The candy Rootbeer House of Kolor looked amazing in the bright sun as did all the brass, nickel plated brightwork courtesy of Sherm’s plating. The one off Colorado Custom Wheels were designed by Hetfield himself. The tandem of Definitive Audio and Bob Divine handled the roadster’s leather upholstery to masterful specs. Keith Dean designed the Carson Top.

In winning the West Coast Custom of the Year award, Hetfield will be presented with a custom toolbox from Snap On wrapped with a vinyl picture of the award winning car. He was also presented with a gorgeous billet aluminum plate designed and machined by Goodguys and Pleasanton Tool.

The car will be featured in full color in the June Goodguys Gazette.
