Rolling History on Display at Goodguys 12th Meguiar’s Del Mar Nationals

February 23, 2012

Hot rod historians will be happy to know the Ed Iskenderian roadster will be on display inside the Ed Pink Racing Engines booth on the midway at the Goodguys 12th Meguiar’s Del Mar Nationals March 30-April 1st at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. Built in 1939 and featured on the cover of Hot Rod Magazine in 1948, Isky’s roadster is truly a time capsule to the bygone era of post war hot rodding. It hasn’t been washed or dusted in over 20 years, maintaining a perfect patina not seen on very many cars today. Fans will have the chance to see the historic roadster, along with Pink’s red ’29 and a few others at Pink’s booth all weekend long.

Both Iskenderian and Pink will be honored as Hot Rod Hero’s throughout the event in Del Mar. On Saturday March 31st, Pink and Iskenderian will take part in a special meet & greet with fans at 11:30am inside the Mission Tower building. The two hot rodding legends will be interviewed, recall career highlights and answer fans’ questions in an open forum. They’ll also sign autographs for fans during the weekend. Pink was able to reproduce a historic old photograph of the two men together at a 1960s era drag race that will be given out for free to fans seeking autographs (while supplies last).

The hot cars of ’83 included the IROC Z28 Camaro, Mustang 5.0 GT, Chevy Caprice Classics, Ford Thunderbird, Pontiac 6000 and Sunbird, among others. On TV, MASH, LaVerne and Shirley, Chips and Taxi were dominating the ratings. Scarface, Return of the Jedi, Risky Business, National Lampoon’s Vacation, Flashdance and Christine were the top draws at the box office. The Police’s “Every Breath You Take” and Michael Jackson’s “Billy Jean” topped the Billboard top 100.

While the 1983 model vehicles are more than welcome to come out Saturday to participate in the 30th All American Get-Together, the special “Flashback Sunday” parking area will be staged on Sunday, March 25th near the Double Decker bus! Speedway Motors Celebrates 60 Years!

February 10, 2012

Speedway Motors Celebrates 60 years!

Speedway Motors, America’s Oldest Speed Shop® and the Official Speed Shop of Goodguys, is celebrating its 60th Anniversary in 2012! Since opening its doors in 1952, Speedway Motors has supplied America’s racers, hot rodders, Goodguys members and performance enthusiasts with the high-quality parts, personal service and expert advice to make their cars faster, safer and more fun.

Founded by racer and hot rodder “Speedy” Bill Smith, Speedway Motors started in a 20×20-foot storefront in Lincoln, Nebraska. “My customer base was pretty limited in those days,” Smith said. “It was tough going at first, but I was determined to pursue my passion for performance.”

From those humble beginnings, Speedway Motors has become one of the world’s largest manufacturers and distributors of parts for the racing and street rod markets and has played a vital role in the performance aftermarket’s growth from a cottage industry into a high-horsepower market force.

This year, Speedway Motors plans to celebrate its historic anniversary with a wide range of contests, giveaways, events and activities. Vintage-style catalog covers reminiscent of the company’s 1960s offerings will be published throughout the year, with historic photos used to highlight different points in the company’s storied past. A 60th Anniversary open house is being planned for the summer, along with a 60 Days of Giveaways promotion featuring prizes from some of the performance industry’s top companies.

“It’s important for us to give back to the community of customers and friends who have helped us reach this milestone,” said Clay Smith, Speedway Motors’ president and one of “Speedy” Bill and Joyce Smith’s four sons. Each of those sons – including Carson, Craig, and Jason – is actively involved in this family-owned business.

While 2012 will be a great year to reflect on Speedway Motors’ rich history, company founder “Speedy” Bill Smith insists that it’s not a time to slow down. “We may be hitting 60,” Smith said, “but we’re still picking up speed. The best is yet to come!”

To learn more about Speedway Motors’ six-decade history, visit www.SpeedwayMotors.com/History. The history page will be updated throughout the year with information on Speedway’s 60th Anniversary celebrations and contests. You can also keep track of anniversary activities on the company’s Facebook page at www.Facebook.com/SpeedwayMotors.

Former Howerton Car Wins 2012 AMBR Award!

January 31, 2012

Howerton Car

Bill Lindig’s Indy-inspired hand formed aluminum bodied speedster won the “America’s Most Beautiful Roadster” crown at last weekend’s 61st Grand National Roadster show in Pomona, CA. Long time Goodguys members will recall the car’s humble beginnings in the shop of Indy Goodguy Jackie Howerton.

For more than a decade, it showed up to Goodguys events and gatherings (including the 50th Oakland Roadster Show in 1999) in bare metal, still a work in progress, due to Howerton’s storied dissatisfaction with anything less than perfection.

It took Lindig’s purchase of the roadster in 2007 to move the project along. After the purchase Lindig handed it over to Pete Chapouris and Alberto Hernandez at So-Cal Speed Shop in Pomona, California, to put the finishing touches on the body, the Howerton-built chromemoly chassis (which incorporates torsion bar suspension at all four corners) and the Chrisman-built Ford 352-cu.in. small-block V-8. It’s all functional as well as beautiful: The speedster reportedly was subjected to 500 shakedown miles before entering the show which we know made Howerton proud!

The win marks the first for Lindig (and, for that matter, SoCal) at the Grand National Roadster Show. Congratulations to all involved!

LOJACK Joins the Party!

January 25, 2012

LoJack

LoJack Corporation (NASDAQ: LOJN), the premier worldwide provider of tracking and recovery systems, will sponsor the event registration center at all 2012 Goodguys Rod & Custom Association events. More than 25 years ago, LoJack created the stolen vehicle recovery category and has since earned a reputation as the proven global leader in that market segment. The company delivers a 90 percent success rate in tracking and recovering stolen cars and trucks, and has helped recover nearly $4 billion in stolen LoJack-equipped global assets.

LoJack offers a stolen vehicle recovery system that is specially designed to meet the unique requirements of classic and specialty vehicles and help owners protect the investment they make in these one-of-a-kind vehicles. LoJack for Classics leverages the company’s newly released next generation, self-powered stolen vehicle recovery technology, which offers several advantages that make it ideally suited to classic cars. One key benefit is that the self-powered LoJack for Classics does not draw energy from a vehicle’s battery, and as such does not need to be connected to the vehicle’s electrical system. Additionally, LoJack offers a personalized installation process to meet the specific needs of classic car owners.

Goodguys are looking forward to this new relationship. “Having LoJack sponsor our event registration centers is a perfect fit,” said Ed Capen of Goodguys. “They’re the gold standard in vehicle recovery. Over the last 25 years, there have been a small handful of specialty vehicles stolen from outlying areas on event weekends. With LoJack and LoJack for Classics having a major presence with us this year, hopefully vehicle theft will be a thing of the past.”
